Insulation is the most-upsold feature on a new garage door and, depending on your garage, either the best money you will spend or completely pointless. Here is how to tell which.
What R-value actually means here
R-value measures resistance to heat flow. Garage doors run from around R-6 for a thin polystyrene panel up to R-18 and beyond for a thick polyurethane-injected door. Be careful comparing numbers between manufacturers, because some quote the value at the thickest point of the panel rather than across the whole door.
Polystyrene is a board slotted into the panel. Polyurethane is foamed in place, bonds to both skins and delivers both a higher R-value and a noticeably more rigid, quieter door. If you are paying for insulation, polyurethane is the one worth having.
When insulation pays for itself
- Attached garage. Shared walls with the house mean the garage temperature affects your heating bill.
- A room above the garage. The single strongest case. Bonus rooms over garages are notoriously cold in a Maryland January.
- You use the garage. Workshop, gym, home office, anything that means you spend time out there.
- Noise matters. Insulated doors are substantially quieter, both in operation and against street noise.
When it does not
A detached, unheated garage used purely for storage gains very little. Spend the money on a better door skin, better hardware or a quieter opener instead.
Insulation is only half the job
An R-16 door with a split bottom seal and gaps down the jambs will underperform a modest door that is properly sealed. Specify a new bottom astragal, jamb weather seal and a top seal, and make sure the installer is not reusing the old stops.
The one thing people forget
Insulated doors are heavier. That changes the spring specification, and if an installer reuses the existing springs on a heavier door, the balance will be wrong from day one and the opener will pay for it. Any proper garage door installation includes springs matched to the new door's actual weight.
Specifying yours
Ask for: polyurethane core, the R-value measured across the whole panel, a steel gauge of 25 or lower (lower is thicker), nylon rollers with sealed bearings, and full perimeter weather seal. We quote all of that in writing before ordering, for homes from Chevy Chase to Salisbury.
